Rombauer won the Preakness Stakes in 2021 and thus dashed the hopes of another Triple Crown winner. At race time, Medina Spirit, the Kentucky Derby winner, was the favorite with a 2-1 chance of winning.
Midnight Bourbon came second and Medina Spirit had to be content with third place.
Medina Spirit on Friday was
for the steroid betamethasone after its Derby win, which resulted in Churchill Down’s coach Bob Baffert being suspended, saying it would invalidate Medina Spirit’s win if the results of the failed drug test were confirmed. The final results of Churchill Downs’ drug tests have not yet been released. Should Medina Spirit’s victory be cleared, Mandaloun would become the Kentucky Derby winner. Mandaloun did not run in the Preakness Stakes.
Two other Baffert-trained horses also had to pass three rounds of blood test before they were allowed to run in the Preakness Stakes. Baffert didn’t take part in the Preakness Stakes this year because he “didn’t want to serve as a distraction,” the coach told NBC Sports.
The Preakness returned to its normal place this year as the middle jewel of the triple crown after the coronavirus pandemic forced a 2020 horse racing schedule to be postponed. Last year, the Preakness was the final stage of the Triple Crown and was only ridden in October.
While the infield at the Preakness Stakes was empty again this year, 10,000 fans were allowed to sit in socially distant “pods” for eight people in the stands.
