Rapper Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, was hospitalized in White Plains, New York after having a heart attack, his attorney told CBS News. Details of what could have caused the heart attack were not given.
Attorney Murray Richman initially said DMX had been released on life support and is self-breathing, but when CBS News later asked to confirm those details, Richman said “not to the best of my knowledge.”
DMX has been nominated for three Grammy awards over the course of his career, received two nominations in 2000 and another in 2001. He has also been nominated for several other awards, including a BET Award for Video of the Year 2006 and an MTV Movie Award for 2002 breakthrough male performance for “Exit Wounds” and multiple MTV Music Video Awards.
Support messages quickly spread on social media when DMX was informed of the state of DMX. Many called him a “legend” in the industry.
“The story of DMX is so heartbreaking,” tweeted Andrew Barber of Fake Shore Drive. “It’s hard to explain how massive he was in the late 90s / early 00s. He touched people in ways I can’t explain.”
MMA fighter Jorge Masvidal tweeted a statement DMX previously made to his fans: “If you fall, get up again, everyone has been through a lot here and you never know what God is willing to do for you until you need him to do something for you. “
