Levar Burton fans can rejoice: The star “Roots” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” will be for “Jeopardy!” The show made the announcement on Wednesday after a long campaign to follow in the footsteps of former Reading Rainbow host, who passed away last year and whose iconic hosting role has since been supported by a rotating group of celebrities and TV -Personalities has been filled.
Burton, a lifelong child literacy advocate who hosted the PBS show Reading Rainbow, said he was delighted with the news on Twitter. The list of temporary hosts includes Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, This Week with George Stephanopoulos anchor George Stephanopoulos, writer and former Jeopardy! Celebrity champion David Faber and award-winning sports director Joe Buck.
“Our goal was to bring a variety of restaurateurs with different skills and backgrounds to our quest for a permanent host. Our passionate fans tell us what they like and we listen,” said executive producer Mike Richards also as a guest presenter – said in a press release shared by the game show.
In November 2020, a petition was launched on Change.org to hire Burton to replace Trebek. It was approved by Burton himself in early April and now has nearly 250,000 signatures. Burton thanked the person who started the petition on Twitter after the game show was announced.
According to the publication, Burton and this new group of hosts will be attending the lectern for some time starting in June for week-long stays. Burton will host July 26-30.
So far this season, the show has been hosted by Ken Jennings – the new season’s first guest host – Richards, Katie Couric, Dr. Oz and Aaron Rodgers.
